Determining an Optimal Maintenance Strategy
Industry: Electricity & Gas Distribution
Various maintenance and inspection policies were found in the peer group, ranging from preventive maintenance to run-to-failure.
One of the lessons learned was that complying to OEM recommendations and expert knowledge tends to be risk avoiding. Moving towards condition based maintenance delivers more data and insights on grid and asset performance. Paradoxically, the lack of data is often causing risk avoiding maintenance strategies.
Calculate the Total Cost of Ownership for every type of maintenance, based on failure behaviour (internal/external), costs (investment or replacement), performance (safety/reliability) and risks. The results showed that the total costs of maintenance is comparable with a maintenance interval ranging between 3 to 13 years.
The use of the TCO model resulted in annual savings of approximately $300,000 per annum.
